The location...

West Wood Yurts has been sympathetically integrated into the surrounding landscape of Cut Thorn Farm and National Trust Gibside in the lower Derwent Valley. We spent a considerable amount of time choosing the perfect location for our small yurt village because we believe the ambience is part of the yurt camping experience. As such, the yurts are nestled into a beautiful, secluded woodland glade of Cut Thorn Farm in a quiet corner of National Trust Gibside. We have just six yurts in our yurt village: 2 large yurts for sleeping up to six people and 4 small yurts for sleeping up to four people. The yurts are generously spaced on our site to ensure your privacy and comfort.

Our yurts...

The yurts at West Wood are real Mongolian gers. A thick felt lining surrounds a wooden frame, with a waterproof cover secured by ropes holding the structure together and keeping the yurts watertight. A transparent skylight at the crown of the yurt provides light and enables guests to see the stars on a clear night. The wooden doors to the yurts and the wooden roof structure visible on the interior of the yurts are traditionally hand painted in colourful patterns to give the yurts an authentic feel. The door of each yurt is fitted with a lock, which can be operated from the inside or the outside for your security. The floors of the yurts are covered in a thick matting for your comfort. Each yurt sits on a large wooden deck, which is furnished with a picnic table, gas stove and barbecue. While gas is included in the price, you will be required to bring your own charcoal for the barbecue.

A yurt inventory... (for a full printed inventory of our small or large yurts click here)

A log burner can be found at the centre of each yurt to keep you warm throughout your stay and a complimentary basket of logs are provided inside your yurt at the onset of your stay. Further logs are charged at £3 per bag (please remember to bring change) and these are delivered to your yurt each morning. Each yurt has been supplied with a fire guard to surround the log burners be found at our log store outside the utility block at the centre of our site for your convenience, as a safety precaution where children are present, as they can get very hot to touch when in use. We take safety very seriously; therefore each yurt is fitted with a smoke detector, a carbon monoxide detector and a fire extinguisher. Please remember that you will be required to bring your own firelighters and matches for lighting the log burner.

Sufficient lighting during the day comes from the skylight at the crown of the yurt. Additional light for use at night is supplied by a solar panel on the wooden deck of the yurts to strip lights inside. There are also tea lights in lanterns for you to light. You might want to bring some spares! It would be a good idea for you to bring a torch with you for if you need to go outside at night, as no external lighting is provided to ensure the yurt village fits into the surrounding landscape. For your convenience we have installed an invertor into each yurt. This is for use charging mobile phones; it is not designed for heavier use such as hairdryers and entertainment systems. We do provide a wind-up radio for you to use throughout your stay with us.

We ask that you take any muddy wellies/shoes off before entering the yurts to help keep them clean. For this reason we have provided a large tub next to the door of each yurt for you to put these in. It would be a good idea to bring some indoor shoes or slippers for you to change into and wear inside your yurt.

Inside, each yurt is fully furnished for your comfort. A large yurt contains two double futons and two single futons, while a small yurt contains one double futon and two single futons. These are colourfully decorated with blankets and cushions, courtesy of Ikea. You will be required to bring your own bedding (sleeping bags/duvets/pillows) with you to put on these when you sleep. We have also put colourful rugs in the yurts to make them feel warm and welcoming. Shelves and coffee tables are provided in each yurt for storage purposes.

Each yurt is fully equipped with pots, pans, crockery, cups, glasses, kettle, cutlery etc. so there is no need to bring your own. We do not have fridges for you to store your food and drinks in, however, each yurt has a cool box and fresh ice packs are provided on a daily basis for your use. Drinking water can be obtained from a tap at the utility block at the centre of our site and can be transported to and from your yurt by the water carriers supplied. We ask that you do your washing up in the kitchen in the utility block located at the centre of our site and return kitchen items to the yurts they belong to. All washing up supplies are provided.

Site facilities...

Two real toilets, two hand basins and two steaming hot showers are located at the utility block at the centre of the site for use exclusively by our yurt camping guests. You will need to bring your own toiletries and towels as we do not provide these on site.

Small bins are provided in each of the yurts. Once full, these can be emptied into the larger bins located at the utility block at the centre of our site. We hope that you will join us in recycling your waste.
